DAP versus SOAP: when agencies ask for the difference
DAP replaces Subjective with Data. In practice that means the note opens with numbers — percentage of independent responses, prompt levels used, frequency of target behavior — rather than with a report of what someone said. ABA agencies, school programs, and many community mental health providers specify DAP because the data section is auditable in a way that a narrative paragraph is not.
Prompt level is the field that carries the note
If you only fill in one field carefully, make it the prompt level. A note that says the client responded at 60% independence with model prompts tells a reviewer something specific and verifiable. A note that says "made progress" tells them nothing. The prompt hierarchy also gives you the Assessment argument for free: as prompts fade, the data shows acquisition.
Recording behavior episodes without making the note punitive
When target behavior occurred, record the count and duration factually and move on. The Assessment section is where you explain the function and the response — not where you editorialize. Reviewers who see emotional language in a behavior note start looking for other problems.
Making the Plan section specific enough to be authorized
A plan that says "continue current goals" is the most common reason hours get reduced. State what you will change, how you will measure it, and over what interval. The generator includes a recommended plan-of-care line with frequency and duration that you can adjust before submitting.

Does DAP work for RBTs writing session notes?
Yes — it is one of the most common formats for technician-level notes. Select RBT as your credential and the output stays within the scope of what a technician documents, with supervision language where needed.
How do I record partial intervals or discontinuous data?
Use the accuracy field for your percentage and describe the measurement method in the observation box. If your agency requires a specific data-collection system named in the note, type it in — the free text box goes into the note verbatim.
Can I use this for a group ABA session?
For group sessions, use the group session note tool instead. It structures the note per member, which is what most payers require for group billing.
